Decoding the Kundan: A Gem of
South Asian Heritage

Hey lovelies, we hope you’re well!

We’re back with another deep dive into desi jewellery. If there’s one jewellery style that has stood the test of time, it’s Kundan jewellery. Let’s take a closer look at the significance of the Kundan in the rich tapestry of South Asian culture.

What is Kundan jewellery?

The Kundan widely originates from
the Mughal era, where it stands as one of the oldest jewellery crafts in India. The style flourished amongst the Mughals, and was soon adapted by the wealthy royals of India. Today, this exquisite craftmanship is adorned by both brides and non-brides worldwide, and serves as a reminder of the intricate artisanship found in South Asian culture.

What is Kundan jewellery made of?

  • Gold / Faux Metal Base: Traditional Kundan jewellery is created using 24-carat pure gold, giving it its signature richness and glow. However, modern adaptations often use gold-plated alloys or silver to create more affordable and versatile pieces.
  • Polished Gemstones or Glass (Kundan): The term Kundan itself refers to the process of setting polished stones or glass pieces into the jewellery. These stones — often glass, crystal, or semi-precious gems — are fitted into exquisitely detailed designs that reflect light with a soft, royal gleam.
  • Lac and Gold Foil: The structure is often built over a base of lac (a natural resin), which holds the stones in place. Behind each stone, gold or silver foil is carefully placed, enhancing the piece’s brilliance.
  • Meenakari Detailing: A beautiful hallmark of authentic Kundan jewellery is the intricate Meenakari work often found on the reverse side. This colourful enamel design adds a second layer of artistry.

What does Kundan mean?

Did you know that the word 'Kundan' derives from the Sanskrit word 'Kundanam', which means 'pure gold'.

Crafting Process

Kundan jewellery emerges through
a very meticulous, multi-step process.

  1. It begins with gadhayi, where strips of 22k gold are shaped into a base framework.
  2. This is followed by khudayi, where intricate patterns are hand-engraved onto the surface.
  3. Then comes meenakari — natural colours are filled into the engravings to add vibrancy and detail.
  4. Finally, in the jadayi stage, precious stones like emeralds or rubies are then set into place using delicate layers of gold foil, locking them into the design with timeless elegance.

If that wasn’t evidence enough, a traditional Kundan set which employs 22 or 24 karat gold can range from 2 to 4 months to complete – a true labour of love, patience and artisanship!
